Sands Of Time

November 10, 2008 | A version of this story appeared in Volume 86, Issue 45

With reference to Bethany Halford’s enjoyable account of Georg Steinhauser’s study of his wedding ring, I note that given a weight loss of 6.15 mg/year, the ring will vanish entirely in 907.95 years (C&EN, Oct. 13, page 56). Unless, as I suspect, trips to the beach and gardening become less frequent after the first 500 or so years of marriage.
