The Northeastern Section of the American Chemical Society seeks nominations for the 38th Gustavus John Esselen Award for Chemistry in the Public Interest. This annual award is given to a chemical scientist whose scientific and technical work has contributed significantly to the public well-being and in doing so has communicated the positive values of the chemical profession. Each nominee should be a living resident of the US or Canada at the time of nomination, and the public impact of their work should have been apparent within the 5 years preceding the nomination.
The award consists of a bronze medal, a $5,000 honorarium, and covered travel expenses to the local section’s April 2025 meeting, where the award will be presented. The awardee will deliver an address on the subject of the work for which the honor is bestowed.
The deadline for nominations is Oct. 11. Nominations should be submitted to Penny Beuning at p.beuning@northeastern.edu, with Jeananne Piper Grady at jpipergrady@gmail.com copied on the email. Nomination materials should be submitted as a single PDF that comprises a letter signed by the primary sponsor with a description of the nominee’s work, including the names of two cosponsors; short supporting cosponsor statements; the nominee’s professional biography, including a list of no more than 10 of the nominee’s publications most relevant to the nominated work; and copies of popular and technical press, news, or feature articles indicative of public benefit and interest.
