The American Chemical Society Geochemistry (GEOC) Division has selected Janet Hering, professor emerita at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology, as the recipient of the 2025 Geochemistry Division Medal. One of GEOC’s missions is to “encourage the highest standards of excellence in developing and applying knowledge of chemistry and related sciences as they pertain to the understanding and exploration of Earth’s geosphere and extraterrestrial bodies.” Hering exemplifies this mission through her scientific accomplishments, effective leadership, and dedicated service to the geochemistry community.
Hering is professor emerita at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zürich and Lausanne and served as Director of the Swiss Federal Institute of Aquatic Science and Technology from 2007 to 2022. She has devoted her career to advancing environmental chemistry and geochemistry and integrating science and policy. Her pioneering work on the biogeochemistry of arsenic has laid the foundation for addressing this critical environmental issue, which affects numerous people, particularly in developing nations.
The Geochemistry Division Medal will be presented to Professor Hering at the ACS Spring 2025 meeting in San Diego. In her honor, the GEOC Division is organizing a special symposium.
