The Georgia Section of the American Chemical Society has awarded James (Jim) D. Martin the 2025 Herty Medal in recognition of outstanding research and service by a chemist in the US Southeast.
Martin, a professor of chemistry at North Carolina State University, has focused his research on the physical properties and processes of materials at the interface of molecular and solid-state chemistry. His discoveries have been pioneering, articulating the role of cooperativity in condensed matter, which has revolutionized the understanding of thermodynamic and kinetic processes, such as crystal growth, and the behavior of concentrated solutions. This insight is critical for addressing grand challenges like climate, energy, and health.
Charles Herty, for which the medal is named, strongly encouraged chemists to “use your chemistry to do something for your state or country.” Heeding this remark, Martin is actively engaged in science and education policy, including being elected to and serving four terms on the Wake County Board of Education. The gold Herty Medal will be presented to Martin at the 91st Herty Award Celebration in September.
