New fellowship funds postdoctoral research in organic chemistry

Postdoctoral scholars get a distinct opportunity through the newly established Arthur C. Cope Postdoctoral Fellowship in Organic Chemistry. This award marks the first time organic chemistry postdoctoral scholars specifically will receive funding for 2 years of research, at $85,000 per year. In contrast, the Arthur C. Cope Award, which has been recognizing outstanding achievement in organic chemistry since 1972, is available to anyone in the field of organic chemistry, whether in industry or academia.

“This program reflects ACS’s strong commitment to nurturing the next generation of leaders in chemistry and supporting their growth through meaningful mentorship and professional development opportunities," says Joerg Schlatterer, director of the American Chemical Society Office of Research Grants.

The award hopes to provide early-career postdoctoral researchers with the intellectual and academic freedom to “develop bold and creative new research directions in organic chemistry that can contribute to a sustainable world,” according to the award description.

“Postdoctoral scholars are at a crucial stage in their careers. This fellowship will provide essential financial support, a strong community, and access to career and professional development resources, which are critical to their success,” says Natalia Martin, assistant director of the ACS Student and Postdoctoral Scholars Development Office.

The fellowship will be awarded yearly to PhD candidates or postdoctoral researchers in their first 2 years of research. Candidates will pursue research at a nonprofit institute in the US and will be expected to partake in developmental activities, including attending ACS meetings.

Eligible candidates must be nominated by an academic mentor or research adviser by April 1. More information on the award, including eligibility and deadlines, can be found at the fellowship website.
