Past award recipients include Gloria Steinem, Jimmy Carter, and Paul McCartney for work in conflict resolution

Scientist and humanitarian Zafra Lerman will receive the 24th International Advocate for Peace Award from the Cardozo Journal of Conflict Resolution. Lerman, who is president of the nonprofit Malta Conferences Foundation, served as chair of the American Chemical Society’s Subcommittee on Scientific Freedom and Human Rights from 1986 to 2011. The award honors Lerman both for her work in the field of conflict resolution and for her innovation in international peacemaking through the creation of the Malta Conferences Foundation.

Under Lerman’s leadership, the foundation brings together participants from 15 Middle Eastern countries for 5-day conferences that cover topics like alternative energy sources, air and water quality, and science education. The goal of the conferences is to use science diplomacy to foster international scientific and technological collaboration among countries that don’t usually work together.

Lerman will receive the award during a ceremony at the Cardozo School of Law on March 6. The ceremony will feature a fireside chat between Lerman and Andrea Schneider, director of Cardozo’s Kukin Program for Conflict Resolution.
