The meeting will include programming for those in academia, industry, and career transition. The meeting theme is “Chemistry for a Better Planet.” For more information about the meeting and program, visit the meeting website at greatlakesregion-acs.org/event-welcome/glrm-2025.
Technical program. Keynote speakers from industry and academia will be discussing green and sustainable chemistry. Scott McCann, Merck & Co. senior scientist, will present “Green Chemistry in Commercial Manufacturing of Pharmaceuticals” on Wednesday, and Bob Hamers, director of the University of Wisconsin–Madison’s NSF Center for Sustainable Nanotechnology, will present “Nanomaterials for a More Sustainable Planet” on Thursday.
You can attend symposia aligned with the meeting theme on green and sustainable chemistry, PFAS, and atmospheric chemistry in the Great Lakes region. Special symposium topics include biologically related small molecules, radioisotopes, the history of chemistry, and the chemical business.

For those involved in science outreach, “Creating More Impactful Science Outreach Activities” provides a hands-on and discussion-based approach to strengthening the reach of your programming. For those interested in chemical safety, “Empowering Academic Researchers to Strengthen Safety Culture” explains how graduate students and postdoc scholars can initiate lab safety teams at their institutions. Other workshop topics include science communication, green chemistry education, career building, exam writing, and innovative strategies for high school chemistry teachers.
Undergraduate programming. If you’re considering what to do after you complete your undergraduate degree, you may find some insights during the career-building workshop “Finding Yourself: Identifying a Career that Matches Your Strengths and Values.” Graduate school representatives will attend the exposition, which is held Wednesday and Thursday. Undergraduates are encouraged to talk with chemists from all career stages at the professional networking event on Wednesday evening.
Exposition. The exposition will begin Wednesday morning and run through Thursday night. Industry and academic exhibitors will be in attendance. The expo offers an excellent opportunity to learn about the latest products on the market and connect with graduate school recruiters. Applications for exhibitors are available on the meeting website.
Awards. Several awards will be presented at a banquet on Thursday. These include the Stanley C. Israel Regional Award for Advancing Diversity in the Chemical Sciences, the Regional Award for Excellence in High School Teaching, the E.
