Mitsui Chemicals, Microwave Chemical develop new carbon fiber process

Mitsui Chemicals and Microwave Chemical have developed a process to make carbon fiber using microwaves. The process uses microwaves to heat fibers during the oxidation process and subsequent carbonization process. The partners, both Japanese firms, say the new technology consumes 50% less energy than the conventional method. They say they may next introduce demonstration equipment.
