The US Department of Energy has conditionally committed to give Aspen Aerogels a loan of up to $671 million to help finance the construction of an aerogel blanket plant in Register, Georgia. The blankets are used as a protective layer within electric vehicle batteries to slow or prevent thermal runaway. Aspen says it already has contracts with carmakers including General Motors and Toyota. Along with Cabot, Aspen is one of two US makers of aerogel, an ultralight silica-based material used in insulation applications.
