Thermo Fisher deal for electron microscopy firm Gatan is off

by Marc S. Reisch
June 15, 2019 | A version of this story appeared in Volume 97, Issue 24

Thermo Fisher Scientific has ended its effort to acquire the electron microscopy supply maker Gatan. The UK Competition and Markets Authority challenged the deal, saying it could lead to higher prices or lower quality for British electron microscope users. The $925 million purchase, arranged almost a year ago, would have complemented Thermo Fisher’s 2016 acquisition of electron microscope maker FEI and the subsequent purchase of desktop scanning electron microscope maker Phenom-World in 2018.
