Shell and China National Offshore Oil are planning a large expansion of their petrochemical joint venture in Daya Bay, China. The partnership is planning a third ethylene cracker, with 1.6 million metric tons (t) of annual capacity. Its two other crackers started up in 2006 and 2018 and have a combined 2.2 million t per year of ethylene capacity. In addition, the joint venture will build plants to make derivatives such as linear α-olefins, polycarbonate, and carbonate solvents. The firms aim to complete the project in 2028.
