For the past 50 years, the American Chemical Society’s Project SEED program has provided summer research experiences to high school students from economically disadvantaged backgrounds. In celebration of the program’s 50th anniversary, C&EN followed two high school students, Christine Folivi and Darlin Paredes, for 10 weeks over the summer of 2018. Working with their mentor Andrew Davis, the duo learned about some of the physics, materials science, and, of course, chemistry behind preserving paper and magnetic tapes at the US Library of Congress. Find out how the program made an impact on them in just a short time.
