Vulcan Energy Resources has received a total of $105 million from the European Union and the German government for a project that will produce heat and lithium from geothermal brines. Vulcan is also working with BASF to investigate supplying the chemical firm’s site in Ludwigshafen, Germany, with geothermal heat, while extracting lithium from related brine. Earlier this month, Vulcan started producing lithium hydroxide from brine at a German plant. The firm hopes to eventually produce 24,000 metric tons of LiOH per year.
