Gevo to buy Red Trail ethanol and carbon capture assets for $210 million

by Craig Bettenhausen
September 19, 2024 | A version of this story appeared in Volume 102, Issue 29

The biofuels maker Gevo has agreed to purchase an ethanol plant and connected carbon capture and sequestration operation from Red Trail Energy for $210 million. The facility, in North Dakota, can make 256 million L of ethanol per year and has permits to inject 180,000 metric tons per year of carbon dioxide into geological storage. Gevo says it plans to use the ethanol in the low-carbon jet fuel technology it is commercializing in South Dakota and may look to sequester other CO2 at the site.
