US Magnesium idles lithium production in Utah

by Matt Blois
December 8, 2024 | A version of this story appeared in Volume 102, Issue 38

US Magnesium has idled a facility near Utah’s Great Salt Lake that produces magnesium and lithium. In July, the company started employing International Battery Metals’ direct lithium extraction technologyto extract lithium from brine used in magnesium production. US Magnesium says it idled the plant because of a drop in lithium prices and could restart production if prices rise. According to the US Geological Survey, equipment failures derailed the plant’s magnesium production in 2021, and issues continued through 2023.
