April 16, 2018 | A version of this story appeared in Volume 96, Issue 16

Toray Industries’ Zoltek subsidiary will spend $130 million to increase output of large-tow carbon fiber. The material is primarily used for making wind turbines, a fast-growing market, Toray says. The expansion will boost Zoltek’s production capacity in Hungary by 50%, to 15,000 metric tons per year. Zoltek is in the process of doubling its large-tow fiber capacity in Mexico.
