English recycling plant to close

by Alexander H. Tullo
November 18, 2024 | A version of this story appeared in Volume 102, Issue 36

Viridor is closing its mechanical plastics recycling facility in Avonmouth, England. The plant, colocated with an energy recovery facility, is designed to process 80,000 metric tons of waste plastics per year. The company says the UK government never followed through on proposed policies to boost recycling rates. Moreover, a glut of virgin polymer capacity worldwide has made it difficult for recycled resin to compete. Europe has also been hit with cheaper imports of recycled plastics from abroad.
