Stora Enso plans pilot plant for making hard carbon from lignin

Stora Enso is testing its lignin-derived anode material in lithium-ion batteries.

The Finnish pulp and paper maker Stora Enso will spend $11 million to build a pilot facility at its Sunila mill in Finland that turns wood-derived lignin into an intermediate known as hard carbon. The company will test hard carbon as a substitute for graphite in lithium-ion battery anodes. Stora says the Sunila mill is the world’s largest kraft lignin maker.
