While the principles and basic applications of infrared spectroscopy have not changed significantly over the past several years, new sampling techniques, changes in interferometer technology, and advances in optical design have allowed for deeper insight into the chemistry and materials we use every day. New handheld FTIR spectrometers allow for field-use and direct on-site analysis of materials without sampling, transporting, and/or destroying the material. Portable FTIR techniques are capable of performing on-site analysis of solids and liquids for quick and actionable results. New microscopy and imaging techniques push the limit of spatial resolution and image size.
