Horst Schulz, 88, of New York City, died Oct. 15, 2024.
“Horst made major discoveries in fatty acid metabolism. His 130 papers have been cited over 5,000 times. He helped us understand the aberrant metabolism of trans fats. He mentored 33 doctoral students between1970 and 2007. The CUNY Graduate Center established the Horst Schulz Award, which it has given annually since 2008 to a doctoral student in the biochemistry program. One former student wrote that ‘the man was irreplaceable, and I was blessed to know him and learn from him.’ "—Manfred Philipp, colleague
