John I. Brauman, 86, of Cupertino, California, died Aug. 23, 2024.
“John’s parting words upon dropping our daughter, Kate, off at college were ‘take organic chemistry for freshman, it’ll be fun.’ Much to her chagrin, he was right. John inspired people, bringing new ideas to chemistry, helping students to recognize their strengths, dispensing advice to colleagues with a wry smile, and weaving in puns at the dinner table. His evident passion for science spurred undergraduates to continue their studies in chemistry, and his astute, and often funny, critiques shaped the lives and careers of generations of graduate students.”—Sharon Brauman, wife
Most recent title: Professor emeritus of chemistry, Stanford University
Education: BS, chemistry, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, 1959; PhD, chemistry, University of California, Berkeley, 1963
Survivors: Wife, Sharon Brauman; daughter, Kate Brauman
