Joe Steelhammer, 80, of Fort Collins, Colorado, died Jan. 8, 2025.
“Joe, a physical chemist, enjoyed a career spanning Oak Ridge National Laboratory, Rohm and Haas, and Buckman Laboratories before he joined Southern Ionics in West Point, Mississippi, in 1995. As director of R&D for over 20 years, he transformed a small pilot lab into a full-scale research facility, significantly advancing the company’s analytical and product development capabilities. A prolific innovator, Joe held numerous patents. He mentored staff, fostering a culture of scientific excellence and curiosity. Passionate about chemistry, he inspired many young professionals (including myself) to embrace its impact. His kindness and generosity are deeply missed.”—Shelby Craver, granddaughter
