Obituary: John S. Winn

John S. Winn, 77, of Lebanon, New Hampshire, died Dec. 21, 2024.

“Born in Lexington, Virginia, John received his undergraduate degree at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and, as a National Science Foundation predoctoral fellow, he received his PhD at the University of California, Berkeley. He pursued postdoctoral work at Harvard University and began his academic career at UC Berkeley before joining Dartmouth College in 1982 as an associate professor of chemistry. He was an extraordinary departmental chair for nearly 10 years, and his research focused on physical chemistry. His textbook, Physical Chemistry, is considered outstanding among its competitors. John had myriad outside interests, including cats, music, film, and world travel—a true Renaissance man.”—Gordon Gribble, colleague
