Klaus Grohmann, 87, of Newton, New Jersey, died Feb. 2, 2025.
“Klaus’s determination is demonstrated by his odyssey from a childhood in Nazi Germany during World War II, through chemistry education in both Germanies and postdoctoral stints in England and the US, to a professorship. He enjoyed 53 years at Hunter College, teaching organic chemistry to thousands of undergraduates and graduate students. He mentored 15 PhD students on phenalene and barbaralane projects. After retirement, he continued his personal experimentation on barbaralanes at Hunter. In addition to chemistry, he was a dedicated departmental citizen plus a valued advisor to immigrant graduate students in their adjustment to the complexity of life in New York City.”—Richard Franck, colleague
