Lon B.Knight Jr., 81, of Greenville, South Carolina, died May 2, 2025.
“Lon spent 48 years at Furman University’s chemistry department, including 33 years as department chair. He published more than 100 scientific articles, focusing on matrix isolation electron-spin resonance spectroscopy. He was the fourth recipient of the American Chemical Society Award for Research at an Undergraduate Institution and was a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science. He was awarded the South Carolina Governor’s Award for Excellence in Science. An outstanding teacher, he received Furman’s Meritorious Teaching Award. Lon was a wise and compassionate leader who developed Furman’s undergraduate chemistry program into one of the finest in the country.”—Timothy Hanks, colleague
