Roderick C. McCalley, 81, of Palo Alto, California, died Sept. 18, 2024.
“Born in Portland, Oregon, Rod received his undergraduate education at California Institute of Technology and his PhD at Harvard University. After postdoctoral work at Stanford University in 1971, he joined the faculty at Dartmouth College in 1972. In 1979, he moved to California to work at Lockheed. Rod was a superb tournament chess player and mountaineer. His mountain adventures with Peggy included climbs in the Swiss Alps, Nepal, and New Zealand. Rod’s retirement goal was to climb the highest peaks in every 20 minute quadrangle of the Sierra Nevada topographical maps, which he fulfilled on his 80th birthday.”—Gordon Gribble, colleague
