Tsung-Ying Shen, 99, of Greenbrae, California, died Sept. 1, 2024.
“T.-Y. won a national scholarship in China to pursue a PhD in England. He met his late wife, Amy Lin, while working as a postdoctoral researcher at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. At Merck & Co., he developed indomethacin and two other nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs. T.-Y. took up a professorship at the University of Virginia in 1986. Among many honors, he received an American Chemical Society Alfred Burger Award in Medicinal Chemistry and was inducted into the ACS Division of Medicinal Chemistry Hall of Fame. He was incredibly determined, hardworking, and devoted to his family. We will miss him deeply.”—Evelyn Shen, daughter
