Thomas Spencer Jr., 90, of Hanover, New Hampshire, died Sept. 30, 2024.
“Tom was an exceptional teacher of organic chemistry and an outstanding research scientist. His work focused on organic synthesis and its biochemical applications related to cholesterol biosynthesis and regulation. Tom was an extraordinary mentor of undergraduates, graduate students, and postdoctoral scientists, many of whom pursued outstanding careers in academia and in the chemical industry. Nobel laureate Barry Sharpless was one of Tom’s first undergraduate research students, and he credits Tom with guidance that proved critical to his success.
