Column chromatography is a double-edged sword. It is often a time-consuming way to purify a target chemical, and it tends to consume a lot of solvent. But sometimes you get a range of pretty colors. Prashansa Kannangara captured this image while working on a synthesis at Indiana University Bloomington. She was looking in particular for ((trifluoromethyl)sulfonyl)-λ1-oxidane, 1,3,5-trimesitylpyridin-1-ium salt, a name that will certainly win you some Scrabble points. “What you see in the picture is what I isolated in the very beginning,” she says. "None of the vials contains the product, but it was really wonderful to see while I was doing the column.”
