BASF backs energy firm

BASF Venture Capital America has put $3 million into Luca Technologies. The Golden, Colo., firm uses biotechnology tools to detect, classify, and study microorganisms that metabolize oil, shale, and coal within the earth into methane. Luca characterizes these underground methane sites as "geobioreactors" and wants to develop them into mass production natural gas farms.
