James J. O’Brien, who has led Ashland since 2002, plans to retire at the end of the year. The company has launched a search for his replacement. O’Brien, 59, transformed Ashland from a small conglomerate of oil refining, chemical distribution, water treatment, and construction materials businesses into a sizable specialty chemical company.
