Evonik Will Shut Carbon Black Plant

September 8, 2008 | A version of this story appeared in Volume 86, Issue 36

Evonik will cease carbon black production at its Aransas Pass, Texas, unit at the end of 2008, after which the site will serve as a warehouse. Evonik says it is investing in its other, more efficient North American carbon black plants to better compete in a business "dominated by volatile raw material and high energy costs." About 30 of 38 positions at the Texas site will be cut.
