New handheld mass spectrometer runs on batteries.

Technology start-up 908 Devices has introduced what it says is the world’s first handheld high-pressure mass spectrometer. Designed for civilian users, first responders, and military teams, the M908 identifies trace-level chemical and explosives hazards. The device, which weighs less than 5 lb, uses ion traps smaller than a millimeter in diameter.
