Chemical Weapons Deadline At Risk

Russia, even U.S., is not likely to destroy arsenals completely by 2012 as mandated by treaty

Russia and the U.S. are losing a marathon struggle to dispose of their vast arsenals of chemical weapons by April 29, 2012, the last deadline set by the 1997 Chemical Weapons Treaty for ridding the world of a whole class of weapons.

The treaty requires countries possessing chemical weapons to declare them to the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons, the treaty-implementing agency. Six countries did so, says Rogelio Pfirter, OPCW's director general. . . .
