BASF plans to expand output of methanesulfonic acid (MSA) at an existing plant at its headquarters site in Ludwigshafen, Germany. The expansion will boost capacity to 30,000 metric tons per year by 2012. The company says MSA is increasingly being used in place of phosphoric acid in detergent formulas because of the high solubility of its salts and its relatively low corrosivity.
