Beta Renewables has opened what it calls the world’s first facility to produce cellulosic ethanol in commercial quantities. Situated in Crescentino, Italy, the plant will convert wheat straw, rice straw, and the energy crop Arundo donax into as much as 75 million L of ethanol annually using enzymes supplied by the Danish firm Novozymes.
