Weighing in at 13 lb, the 1-cu-ft AirAlert can check arriving shipments for chemical spills.

Battelle Memorial Institute has developed a portable device to warn of hazardous airborne chemicals in the workplace. Originally developed for military use at chemical weapons decommissioning facilities, AirAlert uses capillary gas chromatography to detect minute concentrations of phosphorus, sulfur compounds, and chemical weapons before they reach critical levels.
