We discovered that artificial sweeteners are not benign when it turned out that they stimulate the release of insulin via the sweet receptors on the tongue (C&EN, Feb. 10, page 10). What is the effect of sweet enhancers on insulin? Shouldn’t the Food & Drug Administration require this test before releasing these materials for public consumption?
