ExxonMobil will work with Ames, Iowa-based Renewable Energy Group (REG) to study a potential fermentation route to make biodiesel from cellulosic sugars. REG purchased South San Francisco-based LS9 in 2014, bringing in a process to make biodiesel from sugar. The companies will together target nonfood sugars and grapple with problems such as impurities in the fermentation process.
