Companies spent $356 billion on research and development in the U.S. in 2015, up more than 4% from the year before, according to the National Science Foundation. Development accounted for 78% of that spending, followed by applied and basic research. Chemical manufacturing companies, including the pharmaceutical industry, spent over $68 billion in 2015.
