Nitto Denko is working with Crysalis Biosciences to develop a process using fermentation and catalysts to make a biobased version of the solvent acetonitrile, a by-product of acrylonitrile production. Nitto uses acetonitrile to synthesize oligonucleotides. Last year, Trillium Renewable Chemicals and Ineos announced plans for acetonitrile production.
