In support of Eric Block’s evidence against Luca Turin’s vibrational theory for olfaction, as reported by Sarah Everts, one should note that (R)-(–)-carvone smells like spearmint whereas (S)-(+)-carvone smells like caraway, even though these enantiomers must have identical vibrations (C&EN, May 4, page 29).
