German premier Angela Merkel marks Merck’s 350 years

German Premier Angela Merkel was among about 900 guests who attended festivities in Darmstadt, Germany, on May 3 marking the 350th anniversary of drug and specialty chemical firm Merck KGaA. Merck timed the opening of a new innovation center at its Darmstadt headquarters with the anniversary. “The fundamental principles on which our company is based have withstood every transformation,” Frank Stangenberg-Haverkamp, a member of the Merck family, told guests. The family continues to hold a majority stake in the firm.
